Legal Requirements for Obtaining a Registration Certificate

As per the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989, the process for obtaining a New Registration Certificate is as follows :

  • An application for vehicle registration must be made in Form 20 within seven days from the date of taking delivery of the vehicle (excluding the journey period).
  • The application must be submitted along with the following documents :
    • Sale certificate in Form 21 (issued by the dealer).
    • Valid insurance certificate of the vehicle.
    • Proof of address of the owner.
    • Road-worthiness certificate in Form 22 from the manufacturer.

To apply for a duplicate Registration Certificate (RC), you will need the following documents:

 

1) A copy of the vehicle registration certificate (if available).
2) An FIR (First Information Report) in case of a lost or stolen RC.
3) Proof of identity and address.
4) A filled application form for the issuance of a new registration certificate.
5) Payment of the required fees.

The time to receive a new registration certificate typically takes between 7 to 15 days after submitting the required documents to the RTO. However, processing time may vary depending on the region and workload of the RTO.

Yes, if your original vehicle registration certificate is lost, you can apply for a duplicate RC by submitting an application along with an FIR (if applicable), identity proof, and other required documents. After verification, the RTO will issue a duplicate registration certificate.
