Exploring the Advanced Security Features of HSRPs

Cars are zooming into more and more Indian driveways these days. But with great ownership comes a big responsibility: keeping your prized possession safe. While general insurance safeguards your finances in case of theft, wouldn’t it be even better to prevent it altogether?

The industry is revolutionised by High Security Registration Plates that are replacing traditional number plates. To enhance road safety and combat vehicle theft, the Government of India has introduced the High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) system.  Normal plates can be easily duplicated which increases security concerns. HSRPs are equipped with robust security features that allow vehicle identification which can prevent car theft.

This blog post delves into the HSRP’s advanced security features and explores how they prevent unauthorised individuals from stealing your vehicle.

What Makes HSRP Secure?

HSRPs can do more than just display car registration information. They are carefully crafted and packed with state-of-the-art security measures, which together form a great barrier against theft. A closer look at the main factors that contribute to HSRPs’ exceptional security is as follows:

  • Reflective Features : HSRPs are engineered for optimal visibility and safety. The license plates are equipped with advanced retroreflective sheeting that ensures clear visibility in both daylight and at night, significantly enhancing driver safety. Research spanning four decades globally underscores the crucial role of retroreflective sheeting in reducing road accidents and saving lives, a feature especially vital in India’s diverse and challenging road conditions.
  • Chromium-based Hologram : Employing cutting-edge security technologies, these license plates include chromium-based holograms, prominently featuring the ‘CHAKRA’ as prescribed by the Government of India. These holograms are applied using hot stamping at 220° Celsius, ensuring they are weather-resistant and tamper-resistant. The distinctiveness of the hologram makes it easy to spot alterations, providing a quick check against fraud and duplication.
  • Security Inscription: Pearl Pigment Colour is used on these license plates. This innovative ink displays a variable intensity under different viewing angles and lighting conditions, effectively deterring potential counterfeiting through simple printing techniques.
  • Snap Lock: To enhance security, HSRPs are affixed with a snap lock system, eschewing conventional bolting. This method prevents the plate’s removal and reuse, making tampering immediately noticeable. This system is internationally recognised and is utilised in several countries including Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
  • Third License Plate Sticker on the Windscreen: Adding an extra layer of security, a self-destructive sticker is placed on the windscreen of vehicles, detailing critical registration information. This sticker is part of the HSRP system, allowing for swift access to essential data such as the laser numbers, registration date, and RTO details, further securing the vehicle.
  •  Laser-etched 12-digit Alphanumeric Code: Each license plate features a unique 12-digit alphanumeric code laser-etched below the ‘IND’ mark. This code is permanently inscribed, making it impossible to remove or alter. It provides a direct link to a centralised database, facilitating easy access to comprehensive vehicle details, enhancing security and simplifying identification processes.

HSRP Number Plate Features

While the fundamental HSRP number plate features are built into the plate itself, anti-theft number plate screws and fixings provide an additional level of protection. The tamper-evident nature of these specialised screws further discourages unauthorised HSRP removal. These additional security measures improve the effectiveness of HSRPs overall in the following ways:

  • High-Security Screws: The heads of these screws are one of a kind, and only a specialised tool can remove them. Thieves will have a much harder time quickly and discreetly removing the plate because standard tools like screwdrivers won’t work.
  • Tamper-Proof Fixings: The plate is held to the vehicle frame by additional components in some anti-theft fixing mechanisms. These fixings can be rivets or specialised locking mechanisms that make it harder for unauthorised personnel to remove a plate.

What Sets HSRP Apart

There are numerous advantages of HSRP License plate over conventional number plates:

  • Advanced Security : Advanced features of high-security number plates facilitate quick identification of stolen vehicles and reduce theft, unlike standard number plates.
  • Durable Build Quality : Made from high-quality aluminium, HSRPs withstand harsh conditions and heavy use, maintaining legibility, unlike traditional number plates.
  • Improvement in Visibility : HSRPs with reflective film provide better visibility in the dark, which promotes road safety and helps law enforcement.
  • Issuance Control : Every HSRP is distinctly linked to a specific vehicle and its owner, with comprehensive data stored in the VAHAN database, safeguarding against tampering and promoting traceability.

Battling Counterfeit Plates: Illegal activities related to fake plates have been reduced due to HSRP’s advanced security features that make them unforgeable. It improves the rule of law.

Overall, HSRPs significantly improve car safety in India. With many security features, ranging from distinctive laser-etched codes to tamper-evident designs, it is a strong deterrent against theft and illegal use. In addition to improving road safety, HSRPs offer car owners peace of mind.
